Ordering a coffee in Italy

Coffee really is a part of Italian culture. It is a ritual, a tradition, not always easy to understand…
We Italians, generally, have our coffee of the day … ehm …our many coffees of the day quickly, standing at the bar!

Never say ‘espresso’

When ordering your coffee in Italy, you don’t need to specify many “settings”, you just ask for “un caffè”. 'Espresso' is the default kind and single is the default dose: a single espresso simply is “un caffè”.

‘Lo scontrino, per favore’

If it's an airport, a station bar or a tourist place, you should generally pay your coffee before. Then, when the barista asks for the "scontrino", just give him/her your ticket!
